Why does my dog eat his stool or other dogs' stool?

Dogs will eat stool to ingest digestive enzymes and bacteria. Wolf pups in the wild will often eat the mother's stool to avoid starvation. It is natural for dogs of all ages and breeds to feed on stool first in an attempt to satisfy these urges. Also, it is important to consider that a dog's environment and diet, though more steady, is more limited than a wild animals diet. Domestic dogs have few options other than stool to supplement digestive bacteria and enzymes. Often, feeding DOGZYMES Digestive Enhancer can get a dog to stop eating stool by building up significant gut flora levels so the dog no longer craves bacteria. However, in rare cases stool consumption can become habitual and dogs may continue to eat it regardless of probiotic supplementation.
